UTAS School of Creative Arts – Invitation AIR
Wilderness Gallery – Cradle Mountain, Tasmania

2019

The enactment of identity through walking and capturing  the natural environment and Fire affected landscape with iPhoneography

The project investigated how place and memory shape the way we think about landscape and climate change. Martin will examine themes of biophilia, flora, natural history and sites of memory.

Foundational elements advancing this project were related to her PhD Provisional Research program at ECU, Perth, (intermit) and a solo exhibition at Spectrum Project Space, ECU, Perth in June 2019, where Martin presented  200 images and video work over a two week exhibition.

The AIR program facilitated an  opportunity to walk and capture imagery at a number of locations around Hobart’s wharf precinct on the estuary of The Derwent River to natural landscape areas as far south as Port Arthur, Bruny Island and up to Maria Island. On a second invitational AIR at Cradle Mountain Wilderness Gallery during the same period,  Martin travelled to the Central Highlands region of Tasmania  and  walked areas of the Cradle Mt National Park photographing landscape using iPhone 11. The imagers were later developed during studio time at UTAS -School of CA.  During the residency Lucille participated in critique sessions with Master’s Fine Art students and PhD researchers and was invited to exhibit with two AIR artists at the end of her AIR.

The project and AIR program would not have been possible without a Creative Development grant from Dept of Local Government, Sport and Culture and the kind support of staff at UTAS -CAM. Particular thanks go to Dr Lucia Usman, Dr Jan Hogan, Head of Discipline (Art) and Photographic technician Gerard Dixion and DLGSC staff Ali Doherty and Aly May.

The imagery photographed during Lucille’s AIR in Tasmania has been part of the following exhibitions:

2020 – Artwork ‘New World, Other Worlds’ for curatorial exhibition Imaginary Territories at PSAS, Fremantle, West Australia curated by Dr. Kelsey Ashe

2020 – Artworks – Landscape sans Memoir – Covid 1 and Covid 2 – Hanging by a Thread Exhibition curated by WAFTA Textile and Fiber at Holmes a Court Gallery, West Australia
