All That We Are – ATWA
2022
The Precipice project is a new and ongoing multidisciplinary body of work creatively documenting and site responsive to integral salt marsh ecological sites at Pipeclay Lagoon, Venice, Italy and The Northern Rivers Region, NSW. The project began during All That We Are residency in Tasmania in 2022, where Lucille was invited to join the first iteration of The Saltmarsh Project, with a group of artists collaborating under the umbrella of ATWA residency directors.
Precipice takes visual inspiration from Robert Rauschenberg and surrealists who sought a new and liberating visual expression post-World War II. In a post-COVID world, Martin returned to hand-making formats including photo-collage, drawing, found image and lithographic printmaking and textile to make sense of ideas and stories reflecting current times. She sought solace in reflecting on the books. Poetry and verse of from Robert MacFarlane to Arundhati Roy, Frank M. Snowden about underground worlds as a point of reflection.
Her documentary practice follows a trajectory of scholarly research, poetic narratives, found objects before she travels to the location of the residency. During each residency, whether the focus is on researching in academic libraries and archives or visiting a site responsive locations in nature Lucille starts by walking that landscape or urban environment.
