Naturally Selected, responds to global consumerism and over consumption at the expense of nature. Lucille’s use of discarded textiles and wooden ornaments alongside computer embroidered representations of birdlife and nature, explore issues relating to the plundering of natural resources.
Martin brings an optimism inherent in giving new form to life’s discarded objects. Multiple pieces of lace are sewn together forming shapes of trees echoing the fragility of rainforests and old growth forests throughout the world. Recycled wooden bowls represent nature’s geometric shapes. The work titled Conference displays 12 species of endangered Australian Birds. Each bird is computer embroidered in shades of grey on a plain background with long threads falling from the legs of each bird. The many lines of thread are symbolic of a consumer bar code.
Martin’s beautifully created pieces resonate in their appeal. Conceptual in approach, Lucille aims to highlight and fuse the traditional craft practices of sewing and monogramming with modern technology and contemporary language. Her installations take the viewer and the wider public on an intimate and poetic journey, providing dynamic and sensitive engagement.
